MUTUALISM

  • Definition: Mutualism is a relationship between two kinds of organisms that benefits both of them.
  • Ex:The Nile Crocodile benefits from the Egyptian Plover bird that eats pieces of meat from its teeth. The bird gets food, and the crocodile gets its teeth cleaned.
  • Ex:A shark depends on a shark sucker to clean ectoparasites from its skin, the sucker fish gets food.
  • Ex: A clownfish gets protection from predators by living in a sea anemone, and it helps the anemone by luring prey to it, and eating the dead tentacles.

PARASITISM

  • Definition : A relationship where one kind of organism lives on or in another organism and may harm that host.
  • Ex: A mosquito feeds on a human's blood, and it can carry many diseases.
  • Ex: A tick bites a dog and then sucks its blood. It can also transmit disease from other hosts.
  • Ex: A flea jumps onto a cat and sucks its blood, and cause the cat to itch.

COMMENSALISM

  • Definition: A relationship where one organism benefits from another, but does not help or harm it.
  • Ex: A cattle egret follows cattle in the pasture, and eats insects hiding in the grass where the cattle is grazing.
  • Ex: A bird builds a nest in a tree, but the tree isn't getting harmed
  • Ex: A remora fish attaches to a stingray, feeding on its leftovers, but doesn't harm it.
