THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE

  • The Harlem Renaissance took place in the 1920's-30's.
  • It was also known as a time period of rebirth.
  • Began after WW1 and ended during the Great Depression.

HARLEM RENAISSANCE

  • Jazz music flourished during this time.
  • For the 1st time African American art, music, and literature were taken seriously.

ENDING THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE

  • The stock market crash in 1929 led to the end of the Renaissance.

RESULTS OF THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE

  • This period left a legacy in history.
  • It paved the way for future generation to be successful as well

WILLIAM JOHNSON

FLORENCE, SOUTH cAROLINA 1901-1970

STYLE OF ART

  • Started painting with dark colors and a classical style.
  • Then he changed to bright colors and used two dimensions.

LIFE OF JOHNSON

  • Married Holcha Krake in 1930.
  • Spent 23 years in a state hospital in Long Island before he died.

ART LIFE

  • Johnson came to Harlem to go to school at the national academy of design located in NY in 1918.
  • His new style of painting was called a "primative" style.
