John Locke

(1632-1704)
John Locke was a great philosopher who lived from 1632-1704 and was considered to be one of the first british empiricist. The views and theories of Locke greatly affected the theory of empiricism.

Tabula Rusa

  • Tabula Rusa is translated into  blank slate
  • Locke's plan to be able to account for all possible knowledge.
Locke had a belief that we are all born as a blank slate witch is the translation of Tabula Rusa, so a clean sheet of paper at birth. Innocent and unknowing of any type of pain, fear, or other emotion and that we must gain all things from experience.
Tabula Rusa would not easily be believed. Locke had to break it down into several distinctions, such as;
Simple and complex ideas
Particular and general ideas
Primary and secondary qualities.

PRIMARY QUALITIES

WHEN IDENTIFYING A PRIMARY QUALITY IN AN OBJECT IT MUST POSSESS THE IDEAS THAT HUMANS PERCEIVE AS REALLY RESEMBLING THE OBJECT. LIKE ASKING THE QUESTION IS THAT REALLY THE SHAPE OF A TREE, THE LOCATION WHERE IS SHOULD BE AND THE SIZE IT USUALLY IS?

SECONDARY QUALITIES

DOES IT SMELL, TASTE, AND LOOK LIKE THAT WAY? YES. PERCEPTION.
IN CONTRAST TO THE PRIMARY QUALITIES SECONDARY ASKS DIFFERENT QUESTIONS LIKE:
DOES THE SMELL, TASTE, AND COLOR OF THE OBJECT RESEMBLE THE OBJECT ITSELF? THESE OBJECTS DO ACTUALLY EXSIST THROUGH OUR PERCEPTION AND OUR MADE POSSIBLE BY THE MATERIAL OBJECTS.

PHILOSOPHER WAR

  • Took Ockhams's Razor to Descartes theory.
  • Borrowed the account of substance from Aristotle.
  • Was corrected and sliced by the razor by his successor George Berkeley
JOHN LOCKE WANTED TO CONQUER OCKHAM'S RAZOR AND SIMPLIFY THINGS SO MUCH THAT HE MAY HAVE MADE IT MORE DIFFICULT BY USING SUBSTANCE AND CONTRADICTING HIS OWN PROJECT. HE WAS A GREAT PHILOSOPHER WHO TOOK THE WORK OF ARISTOTLE AND DESCARTES TO HELP SIMPLIFY AND CREATE AN ACCOUNT OF COMPLETE AND ACCOUNTABLE KNOWLEDGE. GEORGE BERKELEY CAME IN TO PROVE THAT EVEN SIMPLE, COULD BE SIMPLIFIED.
