Why do we assign posters?

Is it for us or for them?

Why do we assign slide shows?

Is it for us or for them?

Untitled Slide

Think about assigning work higher up on the scale. Posters and slide shows easily fall into Knowledge & Comprehension- nothing wrong with that sometimes, but maybe not all the time. This isn't to say all posters fall in the bottom, nor to say all the tools I'll show fall in the top, just to think about where what you're asking students to do falls on the Taxonomy.

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to berate anyone for assigning posters and slide shows! They certainly do have their place, but you're here to learn some alternatives right?

their future?

Assignments should be relevant to their future college and career experiences. At 1871, there are never going to be posters hung on the walls, or a fair with tri-fold displays. Nor do the start-ups here pitch their projects to investors with a simple slide show of images and words.

audience

Who is their audience?
Who can they share this with?
Parents, community, others? - wider reach than a poster we hang on the wall or PPT saved to our computer.

What about hanging stuff on the wall to show student work? Still ok to print & hang stuff, but also need to share outside the building!

student choice

The power of student choice. Ask them how they want to show their learning.
But...

empower their creativity

After years of doing things the teacher's way, kids may not naturally be inclined to present their learning in new ways. But when they're creating multimedia masterpieces at home, we're killing their creativity if we don't also let them do it here.

Develop a culture of choice and trying new tools from the start of the school year, and kids won't fall in the habit of taking the easy way out.

Let them start developing a digital portfolio! This is the way of the future!
