INNOVATION MINDSET IN ACTION

SHANTHA
Shantha is an innovator par excellence, a game changer.

- An illiterate woman from Kodapattinam, a remote village in India
- At the very precipice of life - 2 kids, an abusive husband, and not enough money to afford even one square meal a day; a seemingly dark pit with no ray of light, no glimmer of hope
- However, overcame all odds and became a game changer
- Got into the game (she was on the edge of society and not a “consumer”, and got into the game by becoming rich enough to afford to become a “consumer”)
- Brought tens of thousands of people like her who were not even in the game, to be active participants in the game, active "consumers"

AND

Hopeless as her situation was, she engaged in AND thinking.

She imagined a future where she would be out of poverty AND her kids would start their adult life educated and out of poverty.

While this doesn't sound like a big dream, it was a big deal in her case because everyone had either:
- Given up all hope (alcoholics)
- Exploited their kids to get themselves out of poverty (child labor...), or
- Sacrificed their entire lives in an attempt to get the kids out of the vicious circle of poverty, but not succeeding

OPPORTUNITY

That AND thinking powered and kept her dream alive. It kept her alert to opportunities.

When a Block Development Officer (BDO) returned from a campaign and talked about Micro finance, she pounced on the opportunity, and decided to take action.

RESOURCEFUL


Her resourcefulness kicked into high gear
- She went door to door. She pleaded. She pitched passionately. In her own words, “I had to go back over 50 times knocking on the same door because they wouldn’t trust me enough to even give 10 Rupees (about 20 cents). I talked to them about how we can work together to solve our problems.”
- She did everything needed to get the required number of people signed up to form a self help group
- She made her pitch to the committee, and got the first loan

OUTCOMES

She was focused on outcomes.

She started with one cow, and from that income repaid the loan and bought more income producing assets. Over a 14-year period she leveraged the power of the virtuous cycle and turned that first loan into a successful organization.

With that money she built her own house, put both her children through college. Her daughter is now a teacher, and her son an engineer.

EXPAND PIE

She expanded the pie:
- Extended a hand, and helped others In similar situations
- Found ways for self help groups to grow and flourish. For example, when she found that a tissue manufacturer was having trouble with productivity because of constant power cuts, she convinced them to invest in a self help group that assembled the tissues into boxes manually, for far cheaper but at the same quality as the machines, resulting in jobs for many people in the village.
