LABOR FORCE

  • People who weren't in the military
  • Atleast 16 years old
  • Worked for pay at least one hour within the last week
  • Worked 15 or more hours a week in a family business
  • Have a job but did not work in last week due to illness ect.

TYPICAL 1950S WORKER:

  • Male
  • Highschool graduate
  • 40 hour work week
  • Worked until 65 and then retired

The Importance of Education
The chart (page 537) shows that the fast growing jobs are based on services that require more skill. Jobs that are basically based on technology.

Collective Bargaining
Meaning people who talk with the company about wages/benefits, work conditions, and job security. (A union)
Arbitration- third party reviews case and makes decisions that is legally binding for both sides.
Mediation- neutral mediator meets with each side to try to find a solution that benefits both.

American labor unions depended and benefited off FDR's New Deal policies. Post war, the percentage of works belonging to a union in 1954 is almost 35%, in 1979 an estimated 21.0 million members, and today we are at a steady 37%.

-The shift in agriculture was when farmers where near water and made the crops grow better for trade.
-Industrial revolution manufactured to where people could do anything with basic tools and/or machines.
-Heavy machinery made Americans leave farms and go work at factories.
-Technology was then advanced to where it would be better and easier to things with.
