Argentina wanted to claim the islands that were once theirs
Margaret Thatcher (Britain Prime Minister) was lacking in popularity
She thought starting a war against Argentina would raise her popularity

Argentina was economically dependent on Britain
Britain was going to give the islands to Argentina
But the islanders wanted to stay British
There was recently a military coup in Argentina
That led to an unstable government
