BACKROUND

  • Olaudah Equiano was born in west Africa in 1745.
  • He was apart of a native tribe in the area.
  • When he was 11years old, he was kidnapped by African Raiders.
  • He was a slave under different masters until he bought his freedom in 1776.
  • He died in 1797.

FACT NUMBER 1

  • When Equiano and his sister were captured, they were separated soon after.
  • I think this is terrible that the Raiders did this to these children.
  • I believe that they separated them so they couldn't plot an escape together.

FACT NUMBER 2

  • Equiano was bought by a British military officer.
  • Under this master he served during the seven years war.
  • I think this is interesting that a British military officer let him serve in the war.
  • I think this experience gave him knowledge that will help him further in life.
  • It makes me wonder if he actually saw combat during this war.

FACT NUMBER 3

  • When he was captured, he went on a journey to the coast across Africa.
  • This journey lasted 6 to 7 months and his captors carried him.
  • I think this is a huge undertaking for the Raiders.
  • The raiders must have been in good physical condition to carry him that far.
  • I think they carried Equiano to keep in good condition to sell.

FACT NUMBER 4

  • In 1792, Equiano married an English woman and settled in London.
  • This woman's name Susana Cullen.
  • I find interesting that he would settle in London instead of going back to his tribe.
  • I would think he would want to settle in a place where there were not many white
  • people due to his past encounters with them.
