COLONIAL AMERICA

WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, AND WHO WAS COLONIAL AMERICA?

  • The nations of Europe rushed to claim land in America in 16th and 17th century.
  • New Netherland was settled by the Dutch in 1624.
  • When the first people arrived they had to build houses from scratch.
  • The colonies were bought indentured servants.
  • In 1775 conflict between the colonists and England became the Revolutionary war.

COLONIAL KIDS!

  • Young boys wore loose-fitting dresses until they were five or six and then dressed like their fathers.
  • Large families were common, six or more children was not unusual.
  • Kids labor was important, both on farms and in towns.
  • For fun children played charades or singing games.

THE RISE & FALL & RISE OF COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG

  • The towns many taverns places were for dining
  • After a fire destroyed Virgina, Jamestown in the early 1700s, Colonial Willimsburg was built
  • Outside wells provided water for cooking and bathing
