R-Z

CHAPTERS 9-12

R is for rumble. During the rumble, Ponyboy realizes that he isn't like the others. He doesn't fight for material reasons. He only fights for self defense. The others fight for pride, fun, hatred, and conformity. Pony realized he didn't have a reason to fight. Thus, reinforcing the title The Outsiders. He is an outsider, no matter where he is.

S is for shot. Johnny was the only one Dally ever cared about. When Johnny died, Dally decided he no longer wanted to live either. Dally decided to rob a grocery store. When the police stopped him under a streetlamp, he pulled out his unloaded gun, and the police shot him.

T is for truthful. When Pony and Dally were riding to see Johnny, Dally was rambling about warning Pony that if he got tuff and mean, nothing could touch you. Dally was not being truthful though, because he is very hurt by Johnny being injured and close to death.

U is for useless. When Dally and Pony went to see Johnny, some Johnny's dying words were that fighting was useless. He didn't want the Greasers and the Socs to fight anymore. He was smart and realized that fighting gets you nowhere in life. Fighting was how the whole thing started.

V is for vacuum. After Johnny's death, Pony was kind of slugging through life. He let his grades drop, and he was just a mess. Darry said he was living in a vacuum. He was getting sucked into all of his problems, and for a while, he wasn't gold. Darry finally snapped him out of it, and he realized how much good there still was in the world.

W is for worried. Pony's English teacher is very worried about his grades. He knew Pony was smart however, after Johnny's death he wasn't really living. Pony's teacher told him that if he turned in a good theme for the trimester, he would pass him with a C-. Pony decides to write about his experiences, starting when he walked out of the Movie House thinking about Paul Newman.

X is for xenophobia. This is a fear of strangers. The Greasers and the Socs only fear and fight each other because they don't know each other. If they would just take some time to work out their differences, their community and lives would be much happier, and there wouldn't be three of their friends dead.

Y is for yelling. After Johnny and Dally's deaths, Darry and Pony continue to yell and fight with each other. Eventually, Soda can't take it anymore and runs away. When they stop him, they find out that the fighting hurts Soda. They then make an agreement to stop fighting. That was when Darry and Pony realized how worthless fighting really was.

Z is for zoned out. When Johnny died, Pony left the hospital, and wandered the streets zoned out. He had a minor concussion, and he was in denial. He was assuring himself that Johnny wasn't dead, he couldn't be. He'd be in the lot, or on their couch, but he wasn't. Finally a younger man stopped and gave Pony a ride home. Pony still believed that Johnny was alive.
