POPE BENEDICT XVI

BY AVA BENASUTTI NICOLE DILULLO & GINA MANISCALCO

•Brief history of his early life•
Pope benedict was born on april 16,1927. In Barvaria, Germany. He was the youngest of three children. His family moved frequently among villages in rural Barvaria. His father was a determined anti-Nazi. Joseph was briefly a member of the Hitler youth in his early teens, after membership became mandatory in 1941.

•How he was elected to the Papacy•
Pope Benedict was elected by a constituency made up of cardinals from countries on both sides. These cardinals on both had battle lines, because he professed strict neutrality in the conflict. Calling the great war "the suicide of europe."He became an instant voice for peace from the beginning of his reign, through his calls were roundly ignored by the belligerent powers.

•Coat of Arms•
The coat of arms incorporates both papal elements as well as the elements of the coat of arms he bore as archbishop of München and freising, and as the perfect of the congregation for the doctrine of faith.

Deus Caritas Est -
“God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 Jn 4:16). These words from the First Letter of John express with remarkable clarity the heart of the Christian faith: the Christian image of God and the resulting image of mankind and its destiny. In the same verse, Saint John also offers a kind of summary of the Christian life: “We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us”.

5. (Continued) Caritas in Veritate -
Charity in truth, to which Jesus Christ bore witness by his earthly life and especially by his death and resurrection, is the principal driving force behind the authentic development of every person and of all humanity. Love — caritas — is an extraordinary force which leads people to opt for courageous and generous engagement in the field of justice and peace. It is a force that has its origin in God, Eternal Love and Absolute Truth. Each person finds his good by adherence to God's plan for him, in order to realize it fully: in this plan, he finds his truth, and through adherence to this truth he becomes free (cf. Jn 8:32).

5. THREE DOCUMENTS

  • Deus Caritas Est
  • Caritas In Veritate
  • Spe Salvi

5. (Continued) Spe Salvi - SPE SALVI facti sumus”—in hope we were saved, says Saint Paul to the Romans, and likewise to us (Rom 8:24). According to the Christian faith, “redemption”—salvation—is not simply a given. Redemption is offered to us in the sense that we have been given hope, trustworthy hope, by virtue of which we can face our present: the present, even if it is arduous, can be lived and accepted if it leads towards a goal, if we can be sure of this goal, and if this goal is great enough to justify the effort of the journey. Now the question immediately arises: what sort of hope could ever justify the statement that, on the basis of that hope and simply because it exists, we are redeemed? And what sort of certainty is involved here?

6. Famous quote :
"When the danger is great, one must not run away." -Pope Benedict XVI
This would apply to young people today because you are supposed to face your fears & overcome them, not run away and be afraid of them. Young people go through a lot of times when they have to decide whether to run away or face their fear.

7. Pope Benedict cares for the faithful in many many ways but the main way that he showed his true gratitude toward the believers but retiring because he didn't think that he could give the church as much as they deserved, Pope Benedict said that god came to him advised him to do so. While being the Pope, Pope Benedict did everything he could do for the believers of the church and as he got older he thought that he could not give them everything that they need. Pope Benedict cared for the Hungary and blessed those who needed a blessing. Some even said that he performed an exorcises. He did everything he could for the church.
