BATTLE OF CAMDEN

  • The battle of Camden was when the patriots fled from the British.
  • The British fired and the militia on the left side fled the battlefield.
  • Horatio Gates was inexperienced and unprepared.
  • He ignored advice from locals to March the continental army through rich farmland where there was patriot support and food.

BATTLE OF SAVANNAH

  • This battle was fought between the American patriot militia and the continental army
  • American colonist rejected the legitimacy of the British parliament to govern the 13 colonies without representation.
  • The French bombed Savannah and joint forces and then advanced into Savannah. However, they were halted by the British.
  • The British encouraged the loyalist to fight against Americans, but failed to get the response they anticipated.

PARTISAN GROUPS

  • American colonists volunteered as soldiers to fight in colonial militias and with patriot partisan groups.
  • Most patriots were from the Low Country and fought in small militias in their local areas.

GUERRILLA WARFARE

  • Patriots fought a guerrilla war against the British regular army.
  • They often took British soldiers in the countryside of South Carolina by surprise in hit and run ambushes.

SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN

  • Was the central area of operations in North America in the second half of the American Revolutionary War
  • The southern campaign began with British concern over the course of the war in the north
  • Failure at Saratoga, fear of French intervention, and over-all failure to bring the rebels to heel persuaded British military to turn their attention to the south
