BACKGROUND

• Born on April 5, 1827
• Born in Upton, Essex, England
• Attended University College in London to study medicine
• Lister became a house surgeon at University College Hospital

DISCOVERY

• Heard that carbolic acid had been used to get rid of a cattle parasite
• Decided to see if carbolic acid would decrease infection
• As a result 85% of patients survived
• He then developed an antiseptic spray which was used during surgery
• This spray kept the wounds from being infected

IMPACT

• Lister's work revolutionized surgery
• His work led to the development of various other researches
• His antiseptic techniques laid the foundation of modern surgery
