PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Introduction
Math is one of the many reasons why we have everything around us. This includes to cars, phones, houses, computers, cameras and many other useful things we use ever day.
People who created these things learn lots of math and vocabulary to invent these inventions. The words that they learn are the exact same vocabulary that we use today.
Knowing The Basics
- Sum
- Difference
- Product
- Quotient
Sum
The word "Sum" defines the answer that you have in an addition equation
2 + 2 = (4)
Difference
The word "difference" defines the solution to a subtraction problem
4-2 = (2)
Product
A solution to a multiplication problem is called a "product"
4x2 =(8)
Quotient
Quotient is the solution to a division problem
8\ 2 = (2)
Types of Numbers
- Whole Numbers
- Natural Numbers
- Real Numbers
- Irrational Numbers
- Rational Numbers
Whole Numbers
A whole number is a number that has no fractions or decimal
1, 2, 3 1.5 1.9
Natural Number
Natural Numbers are counting numbers. This does not include negative numbers
1,2,3,4 and so on -1,-2,-3 and so one a natural number
Real Numbers
Real numbers can be thought of as points on an infinitely long number line.
Real Numbers
Irrational Numbers
Numbers that cannot be expressed as a simple fraction or whole number is an "Irrational Number"
Ex. pi=3.1456...
Rational Number
A Rational Number is a real number that can be written as a simple fraction
1/2 , 3/50

Types of Equations
- Expression
- Equation
- Formula
- Solution
- Literal Equations
Expression
Numbers, symbols and operators grouped together that show the value of something. This does not include an equal sign.
4x4
Equation
An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign.
4x4 =16
Formula
Formula is an equation that states a rule a relationship among quantities.
A= 1/2h(b1+b2)
Solution
A solution is any answer or result in any given equation
4x4=(16)
Literal Equation
A literal equation is an equation where variables represent known values.
A=Bh
Equation Terms
- Quantity
- Variable
- Coefficient
- Constant
Quantity
Quantity is defined as a term that is in a expression, equation, ect. It is used with parenthesis and/or brackets.
(), [], {}
Variable
A variable is a letter or symbol that can be used for a value that changes.
a, b, c a+b =c
Coefficient
The number that is in front of the variable is a coefficient.
Coefficient->(3)x
Constant
Constant is a value that does not change.
3x+(4)
Types of Properties
- Commutative Property
- Associative Property
- Distributive Property
- Identity Property
Commutative Property
Commutative Property is the property of changing the order of numbers with the same outcome (only applies to addition and mulitiplecation)
Associative Property
Associative Property is where the order of numbers grouped together doesn't affect the outcome
Distributive Property
Distributive Property is where multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately.
Identity Propery
Identity Property of Addition Adding is where zero to a number leaves it unchanged. In multiplication, the identity is one and nothing is changed.
The section contains words that couldn't in any of the other sections
More Words (YAY)
- Integer
- Absolute Value
- Recipocal
Absolute Value
Absolute Value is the distance a number is from 0 on a number line
|-56| =56
Integer
An integer is any whole number on the number line. It includes positive and negative numbers.
-2,-1,0,1,2
Reciprocal
Reciprocal To find the reciprocal of a fraction, flip it over, so that the numerator becomes the denominator and the denominator becomes the numerator.
8 -> 1/8 1 is the reciprocal of 8
Inequality Terms
- Inequality
- Compound Inequality
- Conjunction- AND
- Disjunction- OR
Inequality
An inequality is like an equation that uses symbols for "less than"() where an equation uses a symbol for "is equal to" (=).
Compound Inequality
A compound inequality is a combination of two or more inequalities joined by either an 'and' or an 'or.'
3
Compound -AND
Compound Inequality
is where two or more inequalities join together with an AND.
Disjunction -OR
A Disjunction Inequality is where two inequalities connected by the word “or.”
Untitled Slide
- Intersection
- Union
- Contradiction
- Is At Least
- No More Than
Intersection
An Intersection is where the solutions to a compound inequality overlap on a number line.
Union
Union is the combined region that the solution overlaps in a graph.
Contradiction
A Contradiction is where the inequality has no solution no matter what numbers you plug in.
Is At Least
"At Least" is a verbal expression for the inequality symbol
_>_
No More Than
"No More Than" is a verbal expression for the inequality symbol
_
Conclusion
Math is around and everywhere we go. People always think that you will never use math in your future years, but eventually you will.
