SALEM WITCH TRIALS

  • Began in the spring of 1692
  • Young girls thought they were possessed
  • Started when a doctor diagnosed a sick girl with witchcraft
  • Many women were falsely accused as being witches

  • 19 hung
  • 6 drowned
  • When women were put on trial, their lives were spared if the gave up other witches
  • Started March 1 1692 and ended September 22 1692

  • Born in New York in 1915
  • Attended the University of Michigan
  • First broadway play was "The Man Without Any Luck"
  • Most successful play was "Death to a Salesman"

  • Embarrassed of his Down syndrome son
  • Died in 2005 at the age of 89

MCCARTHYISM

  • The practice of making accusations of disloyalty
  • Mostly in the pro- communist realm
  • Accusations were false in most cases
  • The accusers had little to no evidence

  • Joseph McCarthy was the spark of this movement
  • The people being accused weren't really communist
  • This was more of a political attack on these people
  • After having no proof for his accusations he was censured by the senate
