THE BASKETBALL WAS INVENTED IN 1891

• In Springfield, Massachusetts
• The Game of basketball is a team sport
• There are two teams and you have to try and make the ball in the basket
• The basket is raised 10 feet above the ground
• You play this game on a rectangular floor called the court

THE GAME STARTED TO BECOME POPULAR VERY QUICKLY

AFTER THE GAME WAS ESTABLISHED IN AMERICAN COLLEGES

• James Naismith
• Born November 6,1861
• Died November 28,1939 (age 78)
• Coached at The University of Kansas
• Also he was a professor at the University of Kansas

JAMES NAISMITH

• On June 20 1894 he got married to Maude E. Sherman
• They had five children
• Named: Margaret, Helen, John, Maude Ann, James Sherman
• Naismith suffered a major brain hemorrage on november 19, and died nine days later
• Naismith is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence, KS
