HOW TO MAKE OBSERVATIONS IN SCIENCE

LENGTH

  • Meter Stick
  • Usually in centimeters or meters
  • Never in inches
  • Next smallest increment expressed in decimal
  • 100 cm = 1 meter

MASS

  • Triple Beam Balance
  • Zero the balance
  • Add all 3 levels together
  • Measured in grams
  • Dashes = decimal placement

VOLUME

  • Graduated Cylinder or Meter Stick
  • Read the meniscus
  • Record in mL or cm3
  • Irregular objects use volume by displacement
  • L x W x H for measuring square volume - cm3

DENSITY

  • Density = mass / volume
  • Label as g/cm3
  • Be careful with decimals
  • Size does not determine density
