VOCAB YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Guru-a teacher, honoured/religious person, a saint
  • Sikh-disciple [of God], or student/follower
  • God-God to them was the same god for everyone. Something they said:
  • "In The beginning He Was The Truth. Throughout the ages,
  • He has been the Truth. He is the Truth now and He shall be the Truth forever"
Sikhs haven't always been welcomed because of the diversity and the belief there is only one God

START OF SIKHISM

  • It started in the 15th century
  • Made in the Punjab region
  • Guru Nanak founded the religion
  • Ten main Gurus
  • His kindness and generosity made the religion more popular

GOD

  • There is one God for all religions to them
  • He is invincible and sacred
  • He is the Truth and He will always be the truth
  • Acceptance of all races, genders, and religions into their churches
  • All the above is some of their beliefs

GURU NANAK

  • Founder of Sikhism
  • Started as a hindu until a vision
  • Claims to have followed God, not a religion
  • ("There is neither Hindu nor Muslim...")

GURU ARJAN

  • The fifth Guru
  • He blessed his evil, rebellious son
  • Was tortured and killed for this
  • Wether he died by torture or excecution is unresolved
  • Caused too many people to convert (muslim-sikh)

They worship in a Gurdwara: meaning gateway to the guru

The leaders are called Gurus

  • Sharing is vital
