In the upper left of the shield, the stripes number the sons of the House of Loyola; in the upper right, two wolves over a kettle signify the hospitality of the House, even to the beasts of the field; in the lower left, the trees, river and mountains symbolize the river valley in which the school is located; in the lower right, the seal of the Society of Jesus, a shield containing the Greek letters IHS, the first three letters of the name of Jesus. Beneath the coat of arms is the school motto, “Ad Altiora Natus,” born for higher things, the saying of the Jesuit saint, Stanislaus Kost.
