-the depression began in South Carolina many months before it did in the rest of the nation
-many south carolinians were already poor prior to the great depression

FACTS

• up to one in four people were unemployed
• Herbert Hoover was president
• people often lost their homes
• they had to live in "hoovervilles"
• after the stock market crash caused many suicides
