PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SOUTHWEST INTRODUCTION

  • The states include Texas,Oklahoma,New Mexico,California,and Arizona.
  • New Mexico has some of the oldest European settlements.
  • Some of the oldest settles came in the 15 hundreds.

EXPLORATION & SETTLEMENT

  • Region was first by the Spanish explorers.
  • They came here in search for Gold.
  • Thats how California got nicknamed the Golden state.

INDIAN TRIAD

  • They grew maize (corn), beans, squash, tomatoes and chilies.
  • The soaking and grinding added a lot of healthy things to there diet.
  • The way they made there dough is by patting in a 5 inch circle.

CHILIES & RISTAS

  • Chiiles came to the U.S. by Mexico.
  • They are excellent ways of vitamins.
  • They were taken by the spanish over 400 years ago.

PINON NUTS

  • From Rio Grande they brought with them apple, peach, and apricot trees and vineyards.
  • They adapted the pinon nut form Native Americans.
  • It is a amazing dessert and it is kind of like turnovers with meats and pinon nuts.

FRY BREAD & SOPAPILLAS

  • They got the bread from indian food but they call it sopapillas.
  • These hollow delicacies are delicious hot and filled with honey.

TORTILLA

  • One of the major influences of the Southwestern cuisine has been Mexico.

TACO

  • It can be served in a crunchy or soft shell.
  • Has variety of meats and cheese.

ENCHILADAS

  • It is sort of like a casserole.
  • They have lots of cheese and sauce in them.
  • They are filled with cheese,onions,peppers,and meats.

  • It is filled with meats and cheese.
  • Then wrapped in a hot tortilla shell.

  • There nickname is Thingamajigs.
  • There are deep fried with a wheat bread.
  • They contain of spicy meats,cheese and tooped with a salsa.

  • Frijoles are beans.
  • Mexicans eat beans 3 times a day.

  • Most popular use of corn is in a tamale.
  • Can have various meats and stuffing.
  • It is like a beef casserole.

  • called alligator pear.
  • It is usually used in mexico to dip guacamole.

  • There are called the cactus fruit.
  • Are very sweet and can be eaten raw.

COWBOYS & CHUCKWAGONS

  • All of the foods they ate during long summer drives were stored in a chuck wagon.
  • The first people to arrive were in the southwest were cowboys.
  • The main chuck wagon foods were biscuits (sourdough) , beef, and beans (red beans).
