THE THIRD CRUSADE

1189-1192

THE PEOPLE INVOLVED

  • King Phillip Augustus of France
  • King Richard I of England
  • Fredrick Barbarossa I emperor of Germany

KING PHILLIPS OF FRANCE
King Phillips led the crusades to Acre in Asia. After they won, king Phillips went home and left the crusade to King Richard.

KING RICHARD RAISES MONEY FOR THE THIRD CRUSADE

King Richard I of England was the central figure among the Christian knights of this crusade. He raised money for the crusade by the persecution and robbery of the Jews, the imposition of an unusual tax upon all classes, the sale of offices, dignities, and the royal lands.

THE DEATH OF FREDRICK BARBAROSSA

The German crusaders, attempting the overland route, was captured in Asia Minor by the swords of the Turks. This great emperor was now nearly seventy years old, yet age had not kept him from wanting to crusade. The Emperor Frederick was drowned while crossing a stream, and most of the survivors of his army, returned to Germany.

THE TIME OF THE THIRD CRUSADE
Forty years after the failure of the Second Crusade, Richard I of England, Philip II of France and Barbarossa all ended their conflicts to assist the Third Crusade (1189-1192).

THE PLACE OF THE THIRD CRUSADE

In 1190, Richard and Philip marched from France to Sicily where they were going to sail to the Holy Land. Philip joined the Siege of Acre shortly after reaching Sicily, but Richard didn't sail until the next year. It wasn't until Richard arrived the following year that Acre finally fell to the Crusaders. On September 2, 1192 Richard and Saladin signed a treaty where Jerusalem would remain under Muslim control, but also allowed unarmed Christian pilgrims to enter the city. The failure to conquer the Holy Land would lead to the Fourth Crusade six years later in 1192.

EFFECTS OF THE THIRD CRUSADE

After the third crusade, the successor crusades continued to fight over the Holy Lands. The effects that are still present today are that people continue to fight over these lands for ownership.

THE STORY OF KING LIONHEARTED

The Mediterranean certainly didn't agree with him, he was hit by storms. He had to put in at Corfu. There, he was disguised as a Templar knight, for the waters was now controlled by the Emperor of Byzantium, an enemy. He then sailed up the Adriatic and was shipwrecked near Aquilaea.Richard Lionheart was finally ransomed in March 1194 for a huge amount of money. He arrived in England in April and soon brought his wayward brother to heel.
