ARTERIES

BY: MIRANDA KEMERY, BRAYDON CHAON

WHAT IS AN ARTERY

  • Each artery carries blood away from your
  • heart to another body part. They are veins on your heart.
  • A strong heart and healthy lungs are not helpful if your arteries
  • are not clear. An extreme case of atherosclerosis can completely
  • block the blood flow in your arteries.

ITS FUNCTIONS

  • Regular physical activity benefits your
  • cardiovascular fitness. Arteries supply the
  • heart with blood and oxygen. Any people
  • who exercise regularly can develop extra coronary arteries.

ASTRONAUT

  • An astronaut Ed White died in a fire,
  • in 1967. While training for a mission,
  • an autopsy was performed. The doctors said
  • that one of the major arteries was completely blocked
  • due to atherosclerosis.

WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE

  • Arteries are tough on the outside but
  • smooth on the inside. There are actually
  • 3 layers on your arteries, an outer layer of
  • tissue, a muscular middle, and a inner layer
  • of epithelial cells.
