Evolution vs Evolutionary Theory

EVOLUTION- The word

• change over time
• variation within a species
• completely new groups of organisms from other organisms

Evolution- the theory

• species change over time and space
• all organisms share common ancestors with other organisms
• evolutionary change is gradual and slow
• fueled by the process of natural selection

DIFFERENCE?

• evolution is a process, and a FACT
• still happens in modern times
• bacteria can evolve to become resistant to antibiotics
• doesn't have to apply to living things- evolution of technology

Difference?

• the evolutionary theory is a THEORY
• attempts to explain the origin of species
• supported by facts, but the theory itself is not a fact
• introduced by Darwin- "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection"

Evolution- fact and theory

• like gravity, it is both
• you can't say " I don't believe in evolution"
• it would be like saying " I don't believe in gravity"
• it exists, but there is a difference between the fact and the theory
