Key Aspect
"Push greater amounts of cognitive work out to students as soon as they are ready, with the understanding that the cognitive work must be on-task, focused, and productive."

How Do I Do That?  With my voice!

  • "6+8=What Sarah?"
  • Identify the next step.."What do I do with my ones, James?"
  • Reinforce key terms.."What's it called when I bring it to the top, Jan?"
  • Check work..Out loud..If it's incorrect, have a student correct & explain.
  • Jan said 6=2=10.  "What did she do wrong, Pam?"

Methods to use to up the ratio

  • Unbundle- Break ?'s into smaller parts.
  • Half-Statement- Express half ideas...
  • What's next & Feign Ignorance
  • Repeat, Rephrase & Add-On, Why's and Hows?
  • Batch Process, Discussion Objectives-on target!

Use with Direct Instruction to Teacher-Student Discussions.

100 Percent #36, PG.167

Setting & maintaining high behavioral expectations

~There's one acceptable percentage of students following a direction and that is 100%~
~Less, and your authority is subject to interpretation, situation and motivation~

What Does That Mean?

  • If you ask students to raise their hands and be quiet...
  • Some students do that, but some only raise hands or only be quiet
  • Is that acceptable, NO.  WHY?  "Did she mean, that? For everyone?"
  • Warm and positive tone....Culture of compliance positive and invisible..
  • More effective to see compliance.  Eyes On Me, Sitting Up Straight

3 Principles of 100% Compliance

  • Least Invasive Form Of Intervention
  • Lightning-Quick Public Corrections
  • Consequences
