  • Led army of 5000 men against the English
  • Gave her the nickname the Maid of Orleans
  • Burned at the stake-charged with sorcery

WHAT WAS THE IMPACT?

  • Military
  • A standing military was established
  • Mounted knights came to an end
  • New military technologies
  • Longbow

WHEN?

  • 1337-1453
  • Edwardian war
  • Caroline war
  • Lancastrian war

EDWARDIAN WAR

  • War began over rightful owner of the French thrown
  • Salic Law: law that granted Philip the French thrown
  • Edward was not happy with this and invaded

CAROLINE WAR

  • Treaty of Bretigny signed in 1360
  • King wanted to reverse the treaty
  • Wanted land back taken during treaty
  • France started war

LANCASTRIAN WAR

  • England began war
  • Fought over land
  • England wanted to recover Bordeaux
  • Bordeaux port city

WHERE?

  • France
  • Fought entirely in France

WHY?

  • Began over heir to the French thrown
  • King Edward III and Philip VI

  • Also known as the Great Charter
  • First document to limit the kings power
  • Most important document of Medieval England
  • Attempt to stop a king from abusing his power

WILLIAM

  • Feudal system:System of government introduced by
  • Divided land to maintain control-baron
  • William the Conquerer also Duke of Normandy
  • William built the Tower of London
  • Not popular in England bc he was not English

MAGNA CARTA

  • King John was king during this time
  • John had lost a lot of land gained previously
  • John was constantly demanding more taxes and men
  • He needed this for more military attacks
  • Excommunicated by Pope

  • King John was not liked
  • Barons were tired of sending more men
  • And collecting more taxes
  • This resulted in the Magna Carta

  • Catholic Churches position
  • King less harsh on barons
  • England's legal system

  • Serfs were not included
