What Is It
Definition:Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability enough to interfere with daily life.

WHAT CAUSES DEMENTIA

  • Damage to brain cells
  • Damage interferes with communication of brain cells
  • Depression/medication side effects/excessive use of alcohol/thyroid problems/vitamin deficiencies

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN IN CERTAIN People

  • Age/genetics can't be changed
  • Generally doesn't happen with any family history occurring

  • No treatment
  • Insurance options (decides cost)
  • Government programs (see if you're eligible)
  • Tax breaks (if eligible for)

WHO TO SEE

  • Primary care physician (refer you to a specialist)
  • Specialists- Geriatric psychiatrists manage adults care (older adults)
  • Geriatric Psychiatrist- Specialize in mental/emotional problems
  • Neurologists- Specialize in abnormalities of brain/central nervous system
  • Neuropsychologist- Can conduct tests of memory/thinking

  • Can't be cured/slow down
  • Can take 8-10 years to pass person on.
