What Is It
Definition:Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability enough to interfere with daily life.

WHAT CAUSES DEMENTIA
- Damage to brain cells
- Damage interferes with communication of brain cells
- Depression/medication side effects/excessive use of alcohol/thyroid problems/vitamin deficiencies

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN IN CERTAIN People
- Age/genetics can't be changed
- Generally doesn't happen with any family history occurring

- No treatment
- Insurance options (decides cost)

- Primary care physician (refer you to a specialist)
- Specialists- Geriatric psychiatrists manage adults care (older adults)
- Geriatric Psychiatrist- Specialize in mental/emotional problems
- Neurologists- Specialize in abnormalities of brain/central nervous system
- Neuropsychologist- Can conduct tests of memory/thinking
