NICARAGUAN REVOLUTION

1960S TO 1990S

Causes and Origins of the Revoluton

  • Somoza family political dynasty comes to power due to American Involvement
  • Oppressive dictatorship under the Somoza family
  • Formation of the FSLN
  • Foreign Support of both sides and large scale
  • Communist Ideals vs. Non-Communist Ideas

BEGINNING OF THE WAR

  • Terrorist acts with kidnappings and bombings by the FSLN
  • Propaganda and strict regulations imposed by the Government
  • Assassinations and torture used by both sides
  • Riots and organized opposition was demonstrated by people

Proxy War

  • The FSLN was supported by the USSR, Cuba, Greece, Mexico and Sweeden
  • The Somoza Regime was supported by the USA, Spain, Isreal, and Saudi Arabia
  • The Revolution is a great example of a proxy war during the Cold War

Outcome

  • The FSLN ousted the Samoza family and placed their own movement as leader
  • The country was largely left in ruin and as many as 600,000 people we homeless
  • Unstable government and shaky relations with the rest of the world

Lasting Impact

  • The revolution would lead to further tension within the country
  • Eventually resulting in the Contra War and diplomatic tension
