Objectives

  • Explain how parent birds feed their young
  • Define brood
  • Define nestling
  • Explain the difficulty parents face to care for their babies

for birds, feeding is a full time job

it requires perserveance and team work

after baby birds hatch,

they are essentially helpless

birds need to do more than

just feed their young

parents need to remain

"on-call" to provide warmth + care

they also keep their nests clean

and protect their young from predators

materials needed

  • two long tables
  • on straw/spoon per team
  • two buckets/containers per team
  • timer

to be bird parents and fill up their nest

One team member at a time, fill up your spoon with lentils at your food source

Then run back to your nest to "feed your young" and hand off your spoon to the next parent.

The team to fill up their nest the most before time runs out wins!
