BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION

  • This case was put in place because of segregated schools
  • A little girl could not go to a school near her house because it was all whites
  • Court had to determine whether segregated schools were constitutional
  • They decided it wasn't
  • This case started the ending of segregation

BRIGGS V. ELLIOT

  • Challenge of segregated school transportation
  • This was not "separate but equal"
  • Court ruled schools only had to be equalized in education
  • No other elements had to be equalized
  • Didnt get desegregation

STROM THURMOND

  • Wrote "Southern Manifesto"
  • Was governer
  • Elected as dixiecrats' candidate to oppose Truman
  • Against desegregation
  • Started the State Development Board to recruit businesses

STATE DEVELOPMENT BOARD

  • Started by Strom Thurmond
  • Used to attract new industry
  • Recruited businesses to move to south carolina
  • Because of low wages and low taxes
  • Was very successful

ORANGEBURG MASSACRE

  • The only notable violence in SC during Brown v Board was in orangeburg
  • Dozens were injured
  • 3 were killed
  • Police open fired on students from SC State
  • The students were protesting at segregated bowling alley

MECHANIZATION

  • Machines did the work
  • Farmers used this when workers moved to factories
  • Led to more crops and falling prices
  • Improved work speed
  • No need for workers
