1.
MACROMOLECULES
By Elizabeth Nielsen
2.
CARBOHYDRaTES
Any large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues.
Carbs are made up of monomers called monosaccharides. Includes starch and sugar.
Carbohydrates are used by the body for energy and structural support.
Some examples of this molecule include monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides.
Carbs are mainly composed of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen.
3.
PROTEINS
Proteins are molecules consisting of one or more chains of amino acids.
Proteins are used to build cells and do much of the work inside organisms.
These molecules mainly are made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen.
The most common protiens are meat, fish, poultry, eggs, cheese, nuts.
4.
LIPIDS
A lipid is a fatty acid that is nonpolar. Triglyceride is the subunit.
Fats are made of glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains.
Lipids serve as waxy coverings on plants, pigments, and steroids.
Lipids are made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
Some examples are waxes, oils, and fats.
5.
NUCLEIC ACIDS
Nucleic acids molecules consist of many nucleotides.
They carry the genetic information in a cell.
DNA and RNA help the cell make proteins.
The elements are carbon, sugar, phosphate and nitrogen base.
The examples are DNA and RNA
