WHAT IS IT?

  • Phantom of the opera is a broadway musical and is estimated that this musical has been seen by more than 140 million people, and the total worldwide gross is now around $6 billion.
  • Broadway’s longest running show ever when it overtook the record set by Cats

WHAT IS THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

  • Deformed since birth, a bitter man known as the Phantom lives in the sewers underneath the Paris Opera House. He falls in love with a singer Christine, and privately tutors her while terrorizing the rest of the opera house and demanding Christine be given lead roles. Things get worse when Christine meets back up with her childhood friend Raoul and the two fall in love. The Phantom decides to kidnap her and imprison her with him in his lair. Raoul is now the only one who can stop him.

WHO WROTE THE MUSIC?

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber
  • He and his brother Baron Lloyd-Webber, also produced the Phantom of the Opera

ThE FIRST ACT

  • the first act of The Phantom of the Opera was presented to an invited audience at the Sydmonton Festival at Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Hampshire country home.

  • The Phantom of the Opera opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London on 27th September 1986
