  • Second in power only to Zeus

  • goddess of the hearth
  • Gave up position of olympian to Dionyssus
  • Center of family life
  • Zeus's sister

Hera

  • Queen of the gods, married to Zeus
  • goddess of marriage
  • Tries to lead a revolt against Zeus
  • Symbol is the peacock

Ares

  • The god of war
  • Son of Zeus and Hera, disliked by both
  • Murderous and bloodstained, but is a coward
  • Symbols are vulture and dog

Athena

  • goddess of wisdom and battle
  • Born of Zeus and Metis
  • Came out of Zeus's skull, his favorite child
  • Symbol is owl

  • goddess of beauty and love

  • Married to Hephaestus

Hermes

  • Messenger of the gods
  • god of travelers and thieves
  • Son of Zeus and Maia

Artemis

  • goddess of the hunt, chastity, moon
  • Twin sister of Apollo
  • Huntsman of the gods
  • All animals are sacred to her, especially deer

Hephaestus

  • god of the fire and the forge
  • Ugliest of the gods
  • Born of Zeus and Hera, cast out by Hera
  • Is lame, walks with a limp
  • Married to Aphrodite

Hades

  • Ruler of the dead
  • god of the underworld, riches
  • Brother of Zeus and Poseidon
  • Married to Persephone
  • Not considered an Olympian

Demeter

  • goddess of the Harvest
  • Daughter of Cronus and Rhea
  • Has one daughter, Persephone, who is forcefully married to Hades
  • Controls the seasons

DIONYSSUS

  • god of wine, the vine, and parties
  • Son of Zeus and Semele
  • Only god with a mortal parent
  • Can be either joyful or full of rage
  • Eventually regarded as a god of the arts
