EGYPT Unit 1 To me monumental architecture is a building or monument that has some importance to history. For instance, the pyramids in Egypt. Another example is, the Eiffel Tower in France.
Hagia Sophia does still exists today, and is a major tourist attraction. It was built for the purpose of Christianity, but later was converted to Muslims after the Ottomans took over the land.
These two civilizations used their monuments in 2 different ways. Egypt used the pyramids for tombs for dead leaders. Byzantine Empire used theirs for religion and morals to live by. There are also many others that monuments can be used to represent.
The purpose of monumental architecture is to learn more about history. It can be used for many different purposes such as religion, tombs, and even protection. The monumental architecture fulfilled all the purpose I listed above. Monumental architecture gives us a visual representation of history.
