NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS AROUND THE WORLD

NEW YEAR'S EVE
People celebrate and stay up late to see the new year begin.

CHINESE NEW YEAR
Children dress in new clothes for a new year. They carry lanterns in throw firecrackers in a huge parade led by a silk dragon.

ROSH HASHANAH, YOM KIPPUR
Jews believe that God opens the book of life for 10 days. During those ten days they try to atone for wrongdoing and forgive. They blow a ram's horn trumpet.

SONGKRAN
In Thailand there is a three-day water festival with parades that feature huge statues of Buddha that spray water. People tie strings around each other's wrist to show respect.

RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH
The New Year is on January 14 according to the Julian calendar.
