HISTORY OF THE GREEK THEATRE

A BREIF HISTORY OF THE GREEK THEATRE AND A FEW UNCOMMON WORDS.

INTORDUCTION

  • The greek theatre began with many festivals to honor Dionysus
  • In the early plays there was a limit to only three actors per play
  • Soon there became many other actors and stage hands

TRADGEDY PLAYS

  • Thespis is considered to be the first greek actor and originator of tradgedy
  • His importance lowered
  • He is sometimes listed as the sixteenth chronological order

COMEDY PLAYS

  • Comedy was also an important part of greek theatre
  • They were usually an imitation and there are no traces of it's origin
  • Aristophonies most of the comedy plays that were performed

ACTING

  • Ancient greek actors were all male
  • They mostly consisted of ametures
  • The actors had to be very loud and clear
  • However most ancient greek theatres were built
  • So that sound could reach anywhere

COSTUMES AND MASKS

  • the actors always wore masks
  • The masks were made of linen cork
  • The ones for tradgedy had sad expressions on them
  • The ones for comedy had happy laughing faces on them
  • The masks also had a cone so that the sound projected to the audience

UNUSUAL WORDS

  • Attica- a greek area
  • Actor- means to lead in greek
  • Drama- dealing with the writing and performing of plays
  • Thespis- a greek poet who invented greek drama
  • Tragedy- a type of greek play that is sad or depressing.
