Creating a Meaningful Career

What is important to you?

There are 3 ways to create meaning:

  • Within your current work role
  • Outside of your current work role
  • Within your 'sphere of influence' as a whole

Job Crafting

  • Creating meaning within your own work can be achieved via 'job crafting' which is an employee’s volitional actions to shape, mold, and redefine their job in an attempt to improve their experience of work.

Within your current role:

  • Ask to shadow someone else for a day to learn more about what their job entails
  • Express your interest in being part of a new work project
  • Suggest attending a conference that interests you
  • Make an application for flexible work hours

Leisure Activity

  • Studies show that behavior outside of work can have a significant positive impact on employees’ attitudes and experiences at work

Outside of your current role:

  • Join a committee – it could be work –related, or not
  • Volunteer at an organisation that you believe in or are interested in
  • Conduct an informational interview with someone doing a job that looks interesting to you
  • Start some part-time study in an area that interests you

Sphere of Influence

  • Every single interaction you have with another person is a chance to make a meaningful impact

Within your Sphere of Influence:

  • Do things that help colleagues have a better day
  • Ask people how they are and then really listen to the answer
  • Offer little kindnesses
