THE MAIN DEITIES OF EGYPT

  • Amun- supreme god
  • Anubis- god of the dead
  • Aten- creation god
  • Atum- god of the sun
  • Geb- god of earth
  • Hathor- goddes of the sky, love, and fertility.
  • Horus- sun and sky god, ruler of Egypt identified with the pharaoh.
  • Isis- mother god
  • Nut- goddess of the sky and mother goddess

  • Osiris- god of the underworld and judge of the dead.
  • Ptah- patron of sculpting and metal working
  • Ra- sun god
  • Set- god of chaotic and violent forces
  • Thoth- god of wisdom and knowledge, patron of scribes.

  • Ptah-architects transit
  • Ra- Phoenix, pyramid, and the eye of Horus, bull
  • Ibis- baboon, and writing pallets
  • Set- pig, fish, and donkeys

CHARACTERISTICS OF DEITIES

  • Some gods and goddesses had human legs and abdomen but the head and neck of an animal.
  • All deities were clothed in the finest materials and the most expensive jewels and metals.
  • Most were said to live in their own temples where their cult would come to worship them.
  • Enjoyed common past times as the humans did.
  • They were all immortal.

MYSTICAL CHARACTERS AND CREATURES

  • Apep- giant snake and enemy to Ra
  • Bennu- pheonix
  • El Naddaha- female sea nymph
  • Griffin & Hieracosphinx - body of a lion head of and wings of an eagle or hawk
  • Serpopard- serpent necked lion
  • Set Animal- resembles a jackal is the god Sets chosen animal
  • Sphinx- body of a lion, wings of a bird, and the head of a human
  • Uraeus- giant cobra, used as a sign of power

CREATION MYTH

  • In one Egyptian creation myth, the sun god Ra takes the form of Khepri, the scarab god who was usually credited as the great creative force of the universe. Khepri tells us,"Heaven and earth did not exist. And the things of the earth did not yet exist. I raised them out of Nu, from their stagnant state. I have made things out of that which I have already made, and they came from my mouth." It seems that Khepri is telling us that in the beginning there is nothing. He made the watery abyss known as Nu, from which he later draws

CREATION MYTH CONTINUED

  • the materials needed for the creation of everything."
  • This is only one of the many creation myths in Egyptian mythology

EXPLANATORY MYTHS

  • Eye of Ra is associated with the star Sothis, whose heliacal rising signaled the start of the Nile flood
  • Ra being the sun god. Is said to move the sun in its pattern around the world.

SPIRITUAL BELEIFS

  • They believed that the kings and queens were the connections to the gods. And the only people who could communicate with them.
  • They would mummify their people and put them in sacred tombs.
  • Would sacrifice to make their gods happy
