HOW SALTY DOES WATER HAVE TO BE FOR AN EGG TO FLOAT.

Abstract
My experiment is important, because it gives you more information about water density. It also gives you more information about how salt can affect things and about what eggs can be affected by.

Introduction
My research question is how salty does water have to be for an egg to float.
The purpose of my experiment is to determine the amount of salt needed to make water more dense than an egg, causing the egg to float.
My hypothesis is that if I add 3 tablespoons of salt to the water then the egg will float.
My independent variable is the amount of salt and my dependent variable is whether or not the egg floats

MATERIALS

  • Cups
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Eggs
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cups
  • Notebook

PROCEDURES

  • Gather needed materials
  • Fill each cup with 8 oz of water
  • Stir in different amounts of salt in each cup
  • Put one egg in each cup
  • Record results

Discussion of results
I think my results are pretty reasonable even though my prediction was wrong. I did find that my results were a bit different than those of other students who have conducted this experiment. However, the amount of water and eggs used were not the same.

Conclusion
My results show that water is less dense than an egg, unless 5 or more tablespoons of salt is added to the water affecting the density and causing the egg to float. My hypothesis was not correct, but it was close.

Practical Application
My research could be used for studying the affect of salt on density and buoyancy. Also for anyone studying how objects float in different liquids, even though I only used a salt water solution.

Future Expansion
If I were able to do this experiment again I would use hard boiled eggs and non-boiled eggs to see if it affects the amount of salt it takes to make the egg float. I would use a bowl instead of a cup and use more water.
