  • More than what is acceptable by normal standards
  • Root word of name means 'veiled'
  • Represent femininity and fertility
  • Often represent aspects of nature

DIFFERENT TYPES OF NYMPHS

  • Types of nymphs include water, land, wood, and celestial nymphs
  • In each group are many different classifications and subgroups
  • Naiads, okeanides, dryads, anthonai, oreads, alseides
  • Hyades, pleiades, lampades, thriai

NYMPHS IN THE ODYSEEY

  • Nymphs in The Odyssey support themes
  • Gender stereotypes
  • Most are looked down upon or evil
  • Their sexuality is not respected

CALYPSO

  • Held Odysseus captive for 7 years on Ogygia
  • Island Ogygia represents female power and fertility
  • However it is balanced out with Calypso's evil and lust
  • Manipulative qualities of stereotypical Greek woman

CIRCE

  • Witch and sorceress goddess
  • Practiced magic of metamorphis
  • Lived on island of Aeaea
  • Trapped men and turned them into pigs
  • Represents how women, witches, and females are evil when free
