Pakistan vs. India

By: Daphne Ramirez

TYPE OF RELIGIOUS CONFLICT:
The religious conflict represented in the Pakistan (Islam) vs. India (Hinduism) conflict is religion vs. religion.

LOCATION:
The conflict involves India, Pakistan and the sub-continent of Kashmir.

RELIGIOUS GROUPS INVOLVED:
The conflict is between the followers of Hinduism (Hindus) and the adherents of the Islamic faith known as Muslims.

BACKGROUND STORY: The Kashmir dispute has been the main cause of all major conflicts between the two countries with the exception of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, where the dispute concerned the area of East Pakistan, which is now known as Bangladesh. The reason that Kashmir causes the conflict is because both India and Pakistan claim land on the territory. The other reason is because during the division of India and Pakistan in 1947, the land ended being split in the way that a lot of Muslims were sectioned into India, where the major religion is Hinduism. And of course, border skirmishes and disputes followed the split as expected.

CURRENT CONFLICT STATUS:
India and Pakistan are still feuding with each other but the feuds are that of border skirmishes and disputes over resources. The main source of conflict, the Kashmir dispute, is now in the past. Tensions are not as high as they were. However, both of the countries are now in possession of nuclear weapons which does add to the tension.

PEACE TREATIES:
After a brief war in 1947-1948, Kashmir was divided between Pakistan and India. A ceasefire line was agreed under UN supervision, which has since been renamed the ‘Line of Control’. The line is the only major attempt to engage in peaceful relations that has actually worked. Currently, there is no peace treaty to officially end the conflict. Tensions have died down on their own over time.

As of September 2013, there have been over 70,000 deaths and 8,000 missing people involved in the India vs. Pakistan.
