WHAT IS A DESIGNATED SEARCH AREA?

  • A designated area may be a public place set up temporarily.
  • It may be used for up to 12 hours.
  • The area must be approved as having a weapon based offence committed in the last 12 months.
  • Or, in a previous event of a similar type, a weapon based offence has been committed.
  • Notice of a designated area is published in a newspaper 7 days before.

WHAT IS A WEAPON?

  • A weapon is a thing designed or used to inflict bodily harm. These include items such as:
  • Weapons are either prohibited, controlled, dangerous articles or body armour.
  • Canisters discharging toxic or noxious liquids or chemicals such as capsicum spray.
  • Knives and swords, slingshots, knuckle dusters and daggers.
  • Note: imitation weapons, laser pointers and disguised weapons are also defined as illicit.

The police have the right to stop and search any person, including their possessions and vehicle.
