Necrotizing myopathy

Untitled Slide

  • Characterized by a predominant muscle fibre necrosis and regeneration
  • With little or no associated inflammation
  • This histological pattern is observed in acquired myopathy
  • But also in muscular dystrophy

Untitled Slide

  • Acquired NM can be secondary to drugs or toxics
  • If it's not, then autoimmune systems have to be suspected
  • Necrotizing autoimmune myopathy is recognized as a subgroup of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies
  • Which is different from other myositides.

Untitled Slide

  • Generally, patients present a rapidly progressive and severe symmetrical proximal weakness
  • high serum creatine kinase level
  • Can be associated in some patients with cardiac involvement
  • On the other hand, a slower progression may sometimes be observed
  • Could lead to erroneous diagnosis of muscular dystrophy

Untitled Slide

  • Necrotizing auto-immune myopathy can also be described in association with connective tissue diseases such as lupus or sclerodermia
  • cancer association may be observed
  • Many different types of cancer have been reported in association with this disorder

Untitled Slide

  • Necrotizing autoimmune myopathies are now considered as a new entity
  • Treatable by immunosuppressants
  • Some patients who are unresponsive to corticosteroids my use immunosuppressive therapy

Untitled Slide

  • Shoulders and thighs are frequently affected
  • Some patients who are unresponsive to corticosteroids my use immunosuppressive therapy

Untitled Slide

  • Weakness can also affect the respiratory muscles making it hard to breathe
  • And it also affects the muscles of the throat and neck
  • Making it hard to hold up your head and swallow
  • Necrotizing Myopathy can worsen the prognosis of people with cancer
  • Early diagnosis and treatment is important
