THE FACTS ABOUT ALCOHOL

• Ethanol is the type of alcohol in alcoholic beverages
• It is a depressant-a drug that SLOWS DOWN the central nervous system
• Alcohol abuse: the habitual misuse of alcohol
• It takes the liver 1hour to process: 1 glass of wine 5 0z., 1 beer 12 oz., and 1 1.25oz.. Shot of liquor.
• Intoxication: the state of being intoxicated

SHORT TERM EFFECTS

• Females become intoxicated faster than males based on their body composition
• Physical and mental impairment- decreased reaction time, judgement impaired, poor coordination, poor speech and memory (black out)
• Vasodilator- increase heart rate and blood vessels expand
• Inflammation and scarring on the liver

LONG TERM EFFECTS

• Liver disease/cirrhosis of the liver
• Pancreatitis
• Number of different cancers
• Brain damage and addiction

TERMS TO KNOW:

• Binge drinking: drinking 5 or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting
• Alcohol poisoning: sever and potentially fatal physical reaction to overdosing on alcohol(seizures, vomiting, coma, slow breathing, irregular heart beat, DEATH).
• BAC(Blood Alcohol Content): the amount of alcohol in a persons blood stream expressed as a percentage.
• In the state of Illinois the legal limit to drive is 0.08. Anything over that you get a DWI(driving while intoxicated)
• Alcoholic drinks are made from the fermented fruits, grains, and vegatables

SIGNS THAT SOMEONE HAS A DRINKING PROBLEM

• Repeatedly neglecting responsibilities (school, work, family)
• Using alcohol in situations when its physically dangerous
• Experiencing repeated legal problems/school problems because of alcohol
• Drinking as a way to relax and de-stress
• Poor hygiene or smell of alcohol

FACTS ABOUT SMOKING

• Nicotine is the addictive substance in cigarettes/chewing tobacco and it costs about $11.59 a pack!
• Nicotine is a stimulant : drugs that increase the activity of the central nervous system.
• Women who are pregnant should not smoke or stop smoking to prevent miscarriage or birth defects
• Withdrawal: symptoms one experiences when they stop use of a drug/alcohol
• If a person ingests second hand smoke they are still at risk for developing respiratory diseases and cancers
