SUMMARY

  • Construction started on October 17th, 1888
  • Launched November 18, 1889
  • Was the United States first naval ship to be named after Maine
  • It cost $4,677,788.75 to make
  • Built by New York Naval Shipyard, Brooklyn New York

PURPOSE AND HISTORY

  • Sent to Cuba to protect the U.S during the revolt against Spain
  • It was later sunk by a mysterious explosion in Havana harbor, Cuba
  • The U.S government first blamed Spain for the explosion
  • Nearly 3 quarters of the crew died. 268 dead, 200 found and 76 unidentified
  • Technical experts at the time of investigation believed that spontaneous combustion of coal in the bunker most likely caused the explosion
