DES MOINES SCHOOL DISTRICT VS TINKER

  • On Dec. 1965 students support the truce of the vietnam war, and wore black arms bands around holiday season. When told to remove there wristbands they planned to sue the school for violating freedom of expression.
  • The case was dismissed with the reasoning that it was the schools right.
  • It pertained to students, and went to the highest court because it violated constitutional rights.
  • Shows at students have actual right, and that they should not be ignored

BROWN VS BOARD OF EDUCATION

  • A case made up of five separate cases. Each relating to the issue of segregation in public school.
  • After several rehearings, the Supreme Court Justices decided to believe segregation out of public schools.
  • The case pertained to the African-American children, and how they were held back in an educational stand-point. Their discriminatory ways were Unconstitutional, and needed immediate action.
  • Because now diversity and equality is made possible, and this was the case that started a new era.

MIRANDA VS ARIZONA

  • A man charged with robbery, rape, and murder Ernesto Miranda, was charged and not read his rights. When he was interrogated he was recorded, and not given a due process.
  • He was released due to the 5th amendment, and was later retried and convicted for his felonies, with proper confession.
  • It was used for the average person suspected of criminal activity, and allowing them to be read their rights. It was taken to the SC, because it was a matter of our constitutional rights.
  • This cases gives anyone suspected of crime, a way to know where they stand in their rights, and shows why the law should exist.

TEXAS V JOHNSON

  • A man burned an American flag and was fined a great deal of money, and chose to take his case to the SC
  • SC decided the burning the flag wasa issue of free speech, and he was pardoned, due to Americas 1st Amendment.
  • Americans and the matter of free speech.
  • That states still need to follow the 1st amendment.

REDDING 2009 VS SAFFORD UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

  • Safford schools strip searched a girl without her consent, with no reason other than suspicion that she had drugs (ibuprofen) on her person.
  • The SC ruled that it was unconstitutional, but the officials were granted immunity. For a law was not established at that time.
  • It relates to all people and their right to to their fourth amendment.
  • This cases significance lies in the simple fact of nobody's rights should be violated, in that way. Without warrant.

VERONA SCHOOL DISTRICT VS ACTON

  • The football players were using drugs wrongly, and were presented a new policy, and gave out random drug tests.
  • It was decided constitutional, and not considered wrong by the 4th amendment.
  • It pertains to the people, and their fourth amendment freedom.
  • It's important and significant, because it was useful for future cases for using the constitution for out of context cases.
