PRESENTATION OUTLINE
STEPS IN PURSUING JUSTICE
A crime is committed and discovered. The process is dependent on where the crime is committed and whether it demands actions from a local, state, or federal level.
All information is assembled into a report by investigators and if elements of a crime are present, law enforcement will issue an arrest warrant for a suspect(s).
After the suspect has been detained by police, the suspect will then be booked and informed of their Miranda Rights.
Arraignment occurs after booking when the suspect is brought into court to hear the charges and possibly give their plea.
If deemed appropriate, the suspect can get a set bail to be released.
The jury and/or judge will determine the sentencing of the suspect after the terms of the bail have expired and the suspect has been called back to court.
Plea bargaining, a guilty or not guilty plea, and a no contest plea are some of the options a suspect has preceding or during trial.
