"Yes, we even doubted his resolve to exterminate us. Annihilate an entire people? Wipe out a populaion dispersed throughout so many nations?" (Wiesel, 8)

In this part, No one believed the fact that Hitler could betray or trick them. They were very doubtful in this chapter. They didn't believe Moishe the Beatle when he told them the horrors.

I chose the picture because the guy seems unsure, and doubtful.

My quote connects to the name because it explains the part where they were questioning and doubting what they had heard.

Doubtful

Chapter - p. 3-22

My quote connects to the name because it explains the part where they were questioning and doubting what they had heard.

precognition

Chapter 2 p. 23-28
" 'I see a fire! I see flames, huge flames!' It was as though she was possessed by some evil spirit...And as the train stopped, this time we saw flames rising a tall from the chimney into a black sky." (Wisel, 24-28)

I chose precognition, because it's a word that means having foreknowledge of an event, and in the book Mrs.Schachter knew there would be a fire and screamed about it be
fore seeing it with everyone else.
I chose the picture because it symbolizes the future, because you can "see into the future" with a crystal ball.

The quote connects to the name because It is the part where she screams about seeing a fire before it ever happened.

Work makes you free

Chapter 3- p. 29-46
"This one had an iron gate with the overhead inscription Arbeit Macht Frei. Work makes you free. Aushwitz." (Wisel,40)

I chose the name because in this chapter they arrive at Aushwitz and the first thing they see is the sign that says work makes you free and I felt it was very significant.

I chose the picture because it's the real sign that was in Aushwitz, and it gives me chills.

The quote connects because it's the part in the book where they arrived there.

lingering

Chapter 4- p. 47-65
" And so he remained for more than half an hour, lingering between life and death, writhing before our eyes." (Wisel, 65)

I chose this name because in this chapter many of the people are lingering between life and death. They could easily die, and they're at a weak point.

I chose this picture because the tree represents life with color, and beyond that is darkness which represents death. They are in between the two of these.

I chose this quote because it uses the word lingering in it, and is describing what the boy is going through when he's dying.

Hopeless

Chapter 5- p. 66-84
"But there was nothing. Not the shadow of an expression. Defeat." (Wisel, 69)

I chose this chapter name because in this part they don't see a future. They feel so miserable and just hopeless. They don't have hope or faith in God and they don't have hope they will live.

I chose this picture because the man is sitting down, defeated, and looks hopeless. It's black and white so it gives you that dark, gloomy mood as well.

I chose this quote because Elie is talking about how there is nothing left. In this quote he doesn't see hope for anything, so I thought it represented the chapter name of hope.

perseverance

Chapter 6- p. 85-97
"I was putting one foot in front of the other like a machine... 'Don't think, don't stop, run!'"
(Wisel, 86)

I chose this name because this is the part in the book where they are running and traveling from Aushwitz. They had awful conditions, but yet they kept going and pushed themselves harder which is the definition of perseverance.

I chose the picture because it looks like the person kept strong to climb something and I think it represents the mood of my chosen word.

I chose the quote because it shows how he kept pushing himself to do go on and live and persevere through the hard times.

breaking point

Chapter 7- p. 98-103
"'Shlomo, I am getting weak. My strength is gone. I won't make it...'" (Wisel, 102)

I chose this chapter because this is the part where people go through extreme dehumanization, and are breaking down. Meir Katz was the strongest in the beginning but in this chapter he reached his breaking point.

I chose this picture because the person appears to be breaking down and it fits the sad mood.

I chose the quote because it shows the weakness of the prisoners.

Burden

Chapter 8- p. 104-112
"If only I didn't find him! If I were relieved of this responsibility, I could use all my strength to fight for my own survival, to take care of only myself..."
(Wisel, 106)

I chose the word burden for the chapter name because his dad is a burden in his life at this point. He has to take care of him and himself and it's really hard to do that.

I chose this picture because the rock represents the "heavy load" or burden Elie's dad is to him.

I chose the quote because it's the innermost thoughts of what it would be like to not have his dad as a burden on him.

Denouement

Chapter 9- pg.113-115
"At six o' clock that afternoon, the first American tank stood at the gates of Buchenwald." (Wisel,115)

I chose this name as the chapter because this word means the end. The end of all their misery finally came.

I chose this picture because it's a picture of a camp being liberated, which is how the book concluded.

I chose this quote because it's when the Americans finally put an end to the whole disaster and it seemed fitting.
