Beginning

  • First military action of the Cold War
  • Began June 25, 1950
  • War against international communism
  • at the end of WWII the Russians and Americans had to split the imperial possesions of Japan
  • America got South Korea
  • Russia got North Korea

Alternatives

  • back and forth fights
  • calling for an armistice
  • America going to war with China or Russia
  • or even WWIII

The Symbol of the War

  • it was a communist campaign
  • if South Korea had been taken then Russia would keep going from one place to another
  • struggle between East vs West
  • Good vs Evil

The War for America

  • at first it was a defensive war to keep the South from invasion
  • later turned into a offensive war to liberate the North from communism

War

  • Mostly on land, military war
  • some airstrikes
  • mountainous and rugged area
  • Winter - bitter cold
  • Summer - warm

China

  • when the U.S. changed to offensive strategy China was uneasy
  • China sent troops to North Korea to keep the U.S. from its border
  • worried about armed aggression towards Chinese territory
  • Since China was a communist country

Peace Talks

  • started in July of 1951
  • armistice was signed on July 27, 1953
  • POW's could live where they choose
  • new boundary line was made giving South Korea an extra 1500 square miles

Casualties

  • more than 5 million were killed
  • more than half that was Korean civilians
  • almost 40,000 U.S. troops died
  • and over 100,000 wounde
