WHAT ARE TORNADOES

  • A violently rotating column of air
  • Between the surface and a cumulonimbus cloud
  • Has different shapes and sizes
  • Wind speeds about 110 miles per hour

How They Form

  • Air rotates from wind shear
  • The wind moves faster and creates a funnel cloud
  • The funnel gets longer and reaches the ground.

DAMAGE

  • Can destroy whole towns
  • Rip apart house in seconds
  • Flying debris
  • Destroys cars

How To Be Safe

  • Get to shelter
  • Find a spot low to the surface
  • Stay away from windows
  • Stay down and cover your head
